What's New?
Innovative Architecture for Historic Echo Park
Saturday, July 29 @ 2 pm

How can Echo Park accommodate new construction but retain its historic character and scale? In order to encourage thoughtful development, the EPHS will showcase four projects that reflect new urban design but feel at home in our old neighborhood. The program, "What's New: Innovative Architecture for Historic Echo Park," will be the featured presentation of our quarterly meeting.

The buildings range from a single-family home being constructed on a remote public stairway to an affordable housing complex to loft-style condominiums proposed for a warehouse on busy Glendale Boulevard. The presentations include work by Dan Nathanson and Lorcan O'Herlihy; Hollywood Housing Corp., Louis Molina of TM Works and Chris King and Barry Jacob.

The quarterly meeting will also include news and updates on EPHS activities.

Artisan House Lofts

Located at the corner of Glendale Boulevard and Aaron Street in Echo Park, the Artisan House Lofts proposed 37,000 sf multi-family housing project seeks to reinforce the relationship between the building and the city through innovative and responsive design. The scope of the project includes the renovation of four existing industrial buildings into loft style housing, a parking garage and the construction of a new courtyard. The project features 28 units ranging from 800 to 1,200 sf, bringing a diverse group of occupants to the project.

Although, the different identities of the industrial buildings are celebrated, the project is envisioned as a whole. Indispensable elements such as stairs and guardrails are part of a design feature that links the buildings together. This “ribbon” meanders throughout the project activating the experience of the courtyard. The courtyard is conceived as a retreat amongst the industrial setting of Echo Park, becoming an amenity for the occupants and the city

Alessandro Apartments

The Allesandro Apartments include 18 one bedroom special needs units. Funded through HUD, the project is carefully situated on a sloping, narrow irregular site. Seeking to provide exceptional living conditions within budget, the project adapts to the sloping terrain with two stories of residential units, each boasting large corner windows and stepped down the existing hillside. Since parking and common open gardens maximize available space at grade, a glass enclosed community room and an open garden terrace set atop the residential units providing commanding views of the Silverlake Hills to the west. Tenants further have access to a common computer room / "library", laundry facilities, and private picnic ares.

stepHouse

Vacant, buildable land is scarce in Los Angeles.  This project addressesbuilding a home in scale and character with the stair street homes unique to Echo Park hillsides. 65+ steps above the dead end of Landa Street, issues regarding building without having drive access to the lot present unique challenges.  The structural diagram involves wood horizontal members and steel columns allowing repetitive parts to be made in a shop and assembled on site.  Structural members are exposed lessening the amount of material required to finish both the interior and exterior. The house is 1013 sq. ft. with approximately 800 sq. ft. of deck.  To increase the perceived sense of space only walls required for shear are solid, 70% of the exterior walls are floor to ceiling glass.

TMwork Office & Home

We promote a practice focused on designing intelligent spaces for living that are respectful of the environment, and that are resourceful yet frugal.

Specifically we believe in creative, responsive, and innovative design solutions that learn from their site and use, and that address issues such as natural light and ventilation, intelligent use of materials, consideration of flow and circulation, relationships between inside and outside, and ideas about living.
