How to De-Stucco
Restore Your Home's Original Wood Charm
The Echo Park Historical Society considers the "stuccoing" of wood shingled and clapboard bungalows and buildings as the No. 1 threat to our neighborhood's historic fabric. The application of a coat of stucco to a wood-sided house, along with the ripping out of wood windows, doors and trim, are misguided attempts at modernizing an old house. Regular maintenance in addition to limited wood repair and replacement can extend the life of a wood-sided house by decades and saves the cost of a "stucco job."

But what do you do if your home has already been stuccoed? Chances are the wood shingles and clapboard are still there underneath a layer of stucco, chicken wire and tar paper. With a little skill, a hammer, crowbars and a pair of wire cutters, you can free your wood-sided house under its stucco shell.
Members of the EPHS can help advise you  on stucco-removal. We also have sponsored stucco-removal workshops, pictured below.

Hammer away at stucco to wire and tar paper underneath. Create a "u" shape to define a section.

Anti-Stucco Brochures
Help protect Echo Park's historic shingled and clapboard homes and buildings. The EPHS has copies available of  a bilingual, English-Spanish brochure that explains the reasons against applying stucco on a wood-shingled or clapboard home.

Cut away at chicken wire. Peel away stucco inside the "U" section from the wall.. Then repeat.
