Here Today, Gone Today!

An apartment building across from Echo Park Lake was demolished this week just as the city approved a temporary ban on demolitions and new construction in the immediate area. It’s not clear whether the building at 940 Echo Park Avenue next to the Episcopalian cathedral was in the no-demolition zone and what will replace it. A few blocks to the west on Lemoyne Street, Angelus Temple had applied for permits to demolish three residential properties north of Echo Park Lake as it prepares to build a controversial parking garage. The Angelus Temple property is located within the area where an 18-month-long demolition and construction moratorium went into place. EPHS is trying to determine if those properties can still be demolished. The moratorium was adopted to give the city time to survey properties for the possible creation of a historic preservation district (see previous post on this subject).
