School District Fails to Learn:

The Los Angeles school district reported a sharp drop in Echo Park student enrollment but still wants to demolish more than two blocks of homes to build a new campus on the 9A site southwest of Alvarado Street and Sunset Boulevard. The most recent enrollment figures came out as the district held the first meeting last week to prepare a full environmental impact report, which it was forced to conduct after it lost a lawsuit filed by neighborhood residents and groups, including the EPHS. The district said the school is needed to relieve over crowding at nearby campuses; but enrollment has fallen so low as to make a new school no longer necessary. Please contact us at ephs@HistoricEchoPark.org to find out you can help save a portion of Echo Park from demolition and preserve bond money for worthwhile projects. More on 9A.
